Chapter Seven

The next morning Jake scrambled to the NannyCam. His number one priority all along had been not to hurt Hannah, not to lead her on, yet he kept doing foolish things. Even though he hadn’t kissed her the night before, he had wanted to, desperately, and he knew that she had recognized that. So she had been the one to turn away.

He fell onto his chair and flipped on his computer screen. She might have seemed perfectly calm and in control when she turned and raced up the steps. Hell, she might have been calm and in control. But that didn’t mean she had stayed calm. She could have had all kinds of second thoughts before drifting off to sleep. If that almost-kiss had caused her to mistrust him, she could be rethinking all the changes she had made. She might even want him to take her to Pittsburgh to return all the clothes she had bought. And that would be a tragedy because she looked great in those outfits, and she needed the confidence they gave her for her new job in a bigger, more sophisticated environment.

Using his mouse, he tapped the icon to bring the nursery on-screen and there stood Hannah, dressed in her new short-shorts, her cropped hair bouncing as she blew on Dixon’s belly. Not only was she happy, apparently unaffected by what had almost happened between them the night before, but also she was wearing the clothes. She hadn’t changed her mind. She looked fabulous and comfortable, perfectly content and at home with her new look.

His stomach tightened. Her transformation was permanent. And though that was good since she would be moving away, he suddenly realized that also meant he was going to have to live with this happy, sexy woman, without touching her—without even looking as if he wanted to touch her. That thought made him want to punch Luke.

“We’re only giving your daddy one more minute, Dixon, then we’re bathing you without him.”

Jake tilted his head in question, unable to figure out why she was expecting him to join her. She was the one who had sent him to single dad school, telling him she wasn’t going to teach him anymore.

“Your daddy loves you,” she cooed, again tickling Dixon’s tummy. “And pretty soon he’s going to get to the point where you’re the first thing he wants to see in the morning.”

Jake frowned. Actually, that was part of why he ran to the NannyCam. He wanted to see Hannah, gauge her mood, give himself time to figure out what to do, but he also loved seeing Dixon. He loved seeing Hannah play with Dixon.

“I think a few more lessons at the day-care center and your dad’s going to be the best dad in the world.”

Surprised by the compliment, since he pretty much figured she should think he was slime for almost kissing her when he kept saying he didn’t want a relationship with her, Jake sat back in his chair and his chest puffed out with pride.
